importing text files into excel from a set directory on a montly b

hi there,

scenario:

On a monthly basis 20-40 systematically generated text files are dropped
into folder A . These text files follow a consistent naming convention (ie.
TED- june file, SAM- june file).

After a bit of analysis, the files are then moved out of Folder A which
remains empty until the start of the next month (then new files are
automatically dropped in Folder A - ie. TED- july file, SAM- july file, etc)

issue:
reviewing 20-40 individual files is time consuming. I would like to be able
to have excel "look" in folder A at the start of every month and pull the
current files into a pre-formatted spreadsheet.

Ideally, I would like to have a worksheet that is a cumulative list of all
of these txt files, and also a separate worksheet based on each name (the
files start with a specific name, ie. TED, SAM, etc). This way I would be
able to see a running total of all amounts + a breakdown based on each person.

any suggestions would be much appreciated....

I attempted using the import data function, but ran into difficulties with
doing this for multiple files...

thank you,
j

Record a macro while doing one file and post the results.. I will modifiy it
for multiple files.

1) Start Recording from menu Tools - Macro - Record New Macro
2) Import a file from menu Data - Import External Data - Import Data
3) Stop Recording - tools Macro - Stop Recording.
4) type Alt- F11 to go to VBA window. Copy macro from VBA to a Posting on
this webpage.
