Save as from right click menu (a bit off topic)

I ran into a curious thing today. I had a client call saying that when they
did a save as on a .xls file it saved as a .xlsm file which she could not
open. She has office 2003 installed. I don't know if she has the
compatibility option installed.

After some digging, we figured out that she did a save as by right clicking
on the file in windows explorer and just using the default file type, which
was xlsm. I checked on my xp/office 2003 system and sure enough the only
file types available are xl2007 file types (xlsm, xlsx, and xlsb). No plain
old xls.

I am completely perplexed. Why would Microsoft do this? Why would you want
to save a file as a type that you could not open. I was curious and looked
at the save as dialog inside Excel and the 2007 file formats are there, but
are the absolute last options on the drop down.

I can't help but scratch my head...
