Default sumif vs dsum

Hello,
I have a problem. I do not think sumif will work. and I believe Dsum is my
answer.
However I do not really understand dsum.

I am doing a workplan in excel.
I have peoples names in a column. time of task in another column. and I
want to have minths in a 3rd column.
I want to total up the person and month for the time.
so:

John Jan 10
Marry Jan 20
John Feb 5
John Jan 8

etc...

can someone help out?
thanks
