Publish Spreadsheet to Web

I'm looking for simple/fast options to read/write (using Javascript) to an
excel spreadsheet from a web page. One of my thoughts was to publish a
spreadsheet to the web page which can be edited (ideally) which would
eliminate the need to code read/writes. I'm using 2007 now and I know you
used to be able to do this with 2000 (I think).

Can this still be done? If so, how? If not, other ideas?

Is this even the best place to post this question?

All feedback is welcome!

Note that a long time ago I used Excel 2000 I believe and did a save as or
publish (can't really remember now) of a spreadsheet then copied the
resulting html which I then added as a web gem to my web page. Worked great
(well except for version issues depending on what user was using what browser
and had what version of Excel installed). Anyway, as a quick solution to my
problem this would be fine if it worked in 2007 since I no longer have 2000.

Or....as I said some other means to accomplish the above. Ideas?????
Help????
