ok here is what the excel file should look like

3 3 33 3 333 = should equal to 8 3's no matter if there is three
3's in a single cell

Try:

=SUM(LEN(A1:E1))-SUM(LEN(SUBSTITUTE(A1:E1,3,"")))

which is an array formula to be entered with Ctrl + Shift + Enter not just
enter.
