Excel 2003 hangs on save after creating pivot table

I have isolated this problem to something having to do with the workbook
connections. Here is what I know:

When I create a pivot table (using NotesSQL ODBC driver) in a workbook in
Excel 2003, I cannot save the workbook - Excel starts to save, shows the save
progress on the status bar, then just hangs.

When I do the same thing in Excel 2007, I have no problem.

If I create the pivot table in 2007, then open and try to save in 2003, it
hangs.

If I create the pivot in 2007, THEN DELETE ALL OF THE WORKBOOK.CONNECTIONS,
save it, I can open and save in 2003.

You would think that all I need to do is delete all of the workbook
connections in 2003, and everything will be right with the world. One problem
- there is no workbook connections collection in 2003!!! Somehow the
relationship between pivot tables and connections is different between 2003
and 2007.

My ultimate goal is to be able to create and save a pivot table in 2003.

Any suggestions?
