How to know if a range has been selected

There is always a selection, even if it is just the cell that the cursor is
in. The only time there isn't is if there is a shape that is selected.

Can you elaborate a bit.

I'm fairly new to excel vba. Can someone tell me how to determine if a
range
has been selected on a worksheet? If a selection has not been made, I
need
to display a message to the end user.
