how do you color in a cell when its calculated value is negative is negative
or positive, say light red for negative and light green for positive?

Select the cell(s) and choose Format | Conditional Formatting. Set up the
first condition for when the cell value greater than 0 and the second if it
is less than 0.

Click on Format, Conditional Formatting. Use Cell Value Is, change centre
selection to "Less Than", insert a zero in the right hand box, click on
Format, Patterns, select the colour of your choice, click OK,Click on Add,
repeat the process, but change from Less than to Greater than, and OK out.
With a 0 or nothing, the cell will have no fill, with -1 it will change to
red fill, and with 1 it will change to light green
