Please let Excel sort by string value within the cell/column.
 

I need to search down a column for like phrases within the cells. MS Excel
version 2003 (11.8033.8028), SP2.

If the strings aren't too long, you could apply data|Filter|autofilter to that
column.

Then use a custom filter:
contains and your phrase.
