Custom button to call a macro in Personal
The problem:
------------ So I have Excel 2000 still. Some day I will upgrade. Windows XP SP2. I have three custom buttons on my custom toolbar. They are supposed to call three macros in Personal.xls. Well, each button should call one macro, but you know what I mean. When I click on any of the custom buttons, I get the message: "A document with the name PERSONAL.XLS is already open. You cannot open two documents with the same name". And so on. I *know* this, I don't want Excel to try to open Personal.Xls AGAIN, it's ALREADY open, you silly program, just use the macro out of the ALREADY OPEN copy of Personal.xls. If I start Excel and I'm looking at the empty Book1, I can go to Tools/Macros/Macro and run any of my three macros. All the macros do is some simple formatting. What I have done: ----------------- I right-click on the toolbar, choose Customize, then right-click on any of the buttons, and select Assign Macro. What I see in the Macro Name box is 'C:\Documents and Settings\David Walker\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel \XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLS'!Module1.FNumber2 Now, this is strange, because there's not a folder in Documents and Settings CALLED "David Walker", but there IS one called "David.DAVID-C". I have tried assigning the button to: 'C:\Documents and Settings\David.DAVID-C\Application Data\Microsoft \Excel\XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLS'!Module1.FNumber2 but when I look again, it's set to 'C:\Documents and Settings\David Walker\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel \XLSTART\PERSONAL.XLS'!Module1.FNumber2 I don't know where Excel gets off thinking my local stuff is in David Walker instead of in David.DAVID-C. When I'm looking at the Assign Macro window, the three macros are listed below as PERSONAL.XLS!Fdate and so on. I have tried assigning the custom button to just PERSONAL.XLS!FDate, by picking it from the box, but that still gives me the message that Excel can't open another macro with the same name. Plea for help: -------------- Does anyone have any suggestions how to get out of this mess? I have searched Google and there are only a few hits on that error message, none of which are very helpful. I have the same buttons working just fine in my setup at work, but they don't work in my setup at home. Thanks! David Walker |
Custom button to call a macro in Personal
If you've moved the file after you've assigned the macros to the buttons, you
can have this trouble. If you want to make your life easier, try building the toolbar when you open the file and destroying it when you close the file. For additions to the worksheet menu bar, I really like the way John Walkenbach does it in his menumaker workbook: http://j-walk.com/ss/excel/tips/tip53.htm Here's how I do it when I want a toolbar: http://www.contextures.com/xlToolbar02.html (from Debra Dalgleish's site) David Walker wrote: The problem: ------------ So I have Excel 2000 still.
