I need some help caculating the first work day of the month. This will be
used on a monthly dispatch log. Any help wpuld be greatly appreciated.

If the first date of the month is in A1 (e.g. 1 Jan 2006), then:

=WORKDAY(A1-1,1,Holidays)

will give the date of the first workday of the month.

Holidays is an optional range with all of the holiday dates.

If the WORKDAY function is not available, and returns the #NAME? error, install
and load the Analysis ToolPak add-in.

On the Tools menu, click Add-Ins.
In the Add-Ins available list, select the Analysis ToolPak box, and then click
OK.
If necessary, follow the instructions in the setup program.
