Default Why does this produce an error?

Public Sub initialize()
Dim NumberOfColumns As Integer
NumberOfColumns = 13
Dim p(NumberOfColumns) As Integer

end Sub

Seems that Excel doesn't like using Variables to intialize arrays. How
should this be done?
