data validation and forms

what's the preferred way to use data validation with an input form? if data is
entered directly into a cell, validation works, if i use an input form, it
allows any entry.

Data Validation only applies to input made by the user, with the
keyboard and mouse. It doesn't apply to changes made by VBA code.
You'd have to write your own validation routine in the form
itself.
