enabling chart events for an embedded chart

Is it a problem to enable chart events for an already existing embedded
chart, or am I better off enabling events prior to actual charting of data?

No difference. Of course, the chart has to exist before you associate
events with it.

This article gives you the basics:

XL97: How to Trap Events for an Embedded Chart

You note that you set up the class module and then assign a specific chart
to the class. So to use chart events, the chart has to exist. Thus you can
assign it to an existing chart or create a new one and assign it to that.
If you want to handle multiple charts with the class, one way is you can use
an array as shown in this approach by John Walkenbach (this is to handle
multiple commandbuttons with a single class module, but the principles are
the same).
