Default COUNTIF - Cell reference does not work !!

Hi,

If I use COUNTIF(A1:A10,"<A5"), it does not work and does not take
"<A5" as valid comparision. It only takes absolute values such as
"<55".

What is workaround?

Thanks for your time.
