Anyone ever try shared workbooks?
 

Hello -

This is sort of a repost. I have never tried shared workbooks, but found
out it can be done. Some people from this group hadn't tried it, but did not
recommend it.

I need to find someone who has tried this and get an opinion on the
feasibility of it. I have 30 users; they may occasionally run into each
other, but for the most part, they'll be working on different rows at
sporadic times. They will be using the same interface.

Any help will be greatly appreciated! Any reading material suggestions will
also be appreciated. I searched the Internet and came up with virtually zip

Sandy,

Don't do it! Shared workbooks are functionally crippled, and the sharing is
not robust. I have worked on shared workbooks that frequently crash, people
can get into as it says they are already using it, etc., etc.,

You would be far better getting the separate sections into separate
workbooks and use procedures to control it, then summarise in another
workbook, or use Access.

Here is a thought.

Seach this newgroup in Google Groups for the term Shared or shared
workbook.

Assess some of the posts for people who appear to be doing this at a level
of interest to you.

Contact them via email and ask ( if they have used their address).

You will find some people using shared workbooks, but I concur with Bob. Just
don't! They are more problematic than they are worth.

Hi Tom -

Funny you should mention it, I just got done searching under "shared
workbooks" and I did come across a few scenarios which were frightening --
such as all the info in the workbook disappearing! I don't know if that's
due to no protections and a user deleting, etc. I did not come across
anything where they had a user form.

If you note Bob's reply above, he definitely warns against doing it.

I have never use them, so if Jim and/or Bob have actually had that type of
experience, then listen to them.

One thing for sure, in help you should look for shared workbooks and
limitations - go through the list and see if what you want to do is not
supported from Start. As Bob has said, the limitations are extensive.
