Default check for certain dates in excel

I have a spreadsheet that tracks placements of children. A child can move
into or out of a home on any given day. I would like to calculate on a
monthly basis how many days a child was in a particular home. Example. For
an October report: The child moved in on 10/3/05 and is still there. He
would have been there 28 days. I am very familiar with formulas but I am
unable to think of a way to capture this. Please help!
