Is it possible to create a database of say customers with Excel or does it
have to created using Access?

Database

It is possible but not really recommended (my opinion). If you are just
trying to do something small it will work out ok using Vlookup formulas and
such, but if it starts to get large the performance will start to lag. Excel
is not relational. It is best suited to analyzing and manipulating numbers.
If you want to relate data together then by far Access is the better way to
go. The nice thing is that you can store your data in Access and retrieve
manipulate and anylyze it with Excel. This is a very powerful combination.

It kind of comes down to this Excel is a Hammer and Access is a screwdriver.
Both are very handy tools for different jobs. You can pound in a nail with a
screwdriver but it is not the optimal solution. Now you just need to decide
if your project is a nail or a screw.
