Try cleaning up your windows temp folder.

David McRitchie has some notes on slow response at:

I have a spreadsheet with quite a number of macros, none of which run when
the sheet is loaded (they are all triggered by controls on the sheet).

What is really frustrating is the time it takes for Excel to load the
spreadsheet. It can take anything up 45 secs.

Is there anything I can do to speed up the loading time?

thanks

I had tried that one before, it helped some, but the biggest improvement was
deleting the temp *.emf files in c:\Documents and Settings\%Username%\Local
Settings\Temp.

The file with the macros now loads in about 10 secs!!!

thanks
