format? .bmp, .png, or...?

AFAIK they are stored in Excel's *.xlb files

if you have xlXP or newer:

you can get an IPICTDISP object
from .picture and .mask properties of the control.

then use stdole.SavePicture to store as bitmap.

THEN
you'll have the problem of making it transparent.
but many batchconverters can help you there.

I have a complete iconlibrary(ICL) available.
