Excel causing exception error upon opening the document
 

I had someone open it with a later version of Excel and save it in th
Excel 97 format. I was able to open it after that.

Keep a backup.

I had similar problems. I opened the file in xl2002 and it appeared to be fine
-- but just for a little bit.

I had trouble a couple of days later and ended up rebuilding one of the
worksheets in that corrupted workbook.

Here's hoping you don't have too much work to do.
