well, from what i got out of it the $ were to keep it from changing if
copy the cells down the sheet. but if i wanted to do it once and neve
copy it, i wouldnt use the $. So, for fun i took them away and i
doesnt work at all

You must have made a mistake. It should work with no problem in a single
cell without the $ sign.

=if(A2<"",vlookup(A2,D1:E200,2,False),"")
