Protected File
 

I have a spreadsheet at work that I keep on my desktop.
I use this file everyday. I also share the computer with
another employee. My problem: This other employee
thinks it is "funny" to delete my file every couple of
days. I have since copied it to a floppy and only use
the floppy to work from.

Is there a way to protect a file so it can not be deleted
without a password first?

If the other user is deleting it from Windows then no protection from Excel
will help. Suggest you store a copy in another place and change the file
parameter to hidden, that might at least give some protection.

Alternatively since it is a business system, presumably for business use, I
would advise the other person that it is a dismissable offence to interfere
with the system!!

First, when you work on your file, use Windows explorer to copy it from the
floppy to your harddrive (or network drive).

Work on it as much as you want. Save the file back to the harddrive.

Then use windows explorer to copy it back to the floppy.

Lots of bad things can happen if you edit directly on a floppy.

I don't think you can stop the comedians from deleting your file. I like to put
my files in a folder (not the desktop).

Then I'll create shortcuts on the desktop to the real file in that other
folder.

They could still delete that shortcut, but they may miss the real file. (but
I'd keep a backup anyway.)

In newer versions of windows, you can set up profiles for each user of the pc.
Each user will get a different desktop when they logon. Any chance you could
ask your IT folks to do that for you?

Maybe one profile for everyone else (maybe you, too) and one for just you.
