Anyone have any ideas how I could use an excel VBA macro to detect if
web page has changed or not?
I have thought of somehow downloading the source code and sticking i
into a variable, then doing the same again shortly after and comparin
the two. (don't know how mind you)

Any ideas? I want to do this in the simplest way possible really, but
would be happy with any solution

You are correct about storing it to variable and comparing on each
download. As to downloading the HTML source, take a look at
http://www.ostrosoft.com/oswinsck/oswinsck_vba.asp
