Problems with Personal.xls

Cross-Post (misc, programming, and setup)

Yesterday, my long standing (and reasonably simple) macros failed to
function producing an error statement "Personal.xls is already open." It
was not (hidden or otherwise). After much fruitless troubleshooting and web
searched for similar problems, I deleted the personal.xls file and recreated
the first of my macros which functioned normally. On adding a second macro,
the problem recurred. Searched the entire HD for stray copies of
personal.xls, found several shortcuts, deleted all. Cannot resolve this
issue - any suggestions?

Recent system changes:
Added SP-3 to Office XP but do not believe that is related.
Upgraded from Norton AntiVirus 2001 to 2004.
