A barcode font is sufficient - no programming needed and quality is
ensured. Take a look at www.morovia.com/font/support. Several samples
can be found there.

This is a rather old thread, free fonts are available,
so there is no need to purchase a barcode font:

There are over 300 barcodes, some do require programming,
(or a program), but you can create barcodes with just a font.
