Corrupt Excel File, I'm Toast! I'm beggin here...
Spent the past several days grinding out a spreadsheet, and I've been
carefull to save repeatedly. Just ready to run the print off for the meetings this week, and it crashed... Running Win Mil, Excel 2000. I get an Excel has caused an Error in Excel.exe. I booted into Safe mode, same error. I tried loading the file with out enabling macros, same error. I can load other .xls spreadsheets, just not the master one. I loaded the file onto another computer, same error. Think I'm going to be sick here.... Here's the error. Could be any number of things. Will it open on anyone else's machine - If so
then do a search for your *.xlb file and trash it or rename it to *.old (Its a toolbar customisation file, and Excel will create another one, though you do lose any customisations obviously). If you have access to Excel XP or 2003 then you could get someone to try the repair option for you. If you don't, then by all means fire it down to me if you can and I'll have a go for you. OpenOffice is also good at opening corrupt Excel files. Sometimes with repaired files though you only get back the raw data and not all the formulas. If yo do want to mail it to me then take the NOSPAM out of email my address. -- Regards Ken....................... Maybe not enough, but I heard that Star Office (free program as far as I
know) often can open Excel files which Excel itself can't open anymore. I'm not sure wether your formula's are retained or that you will only get values (if it does work at all). And most likely that it will not include your macro's. -- Regards, Auk Ales * Please reply to this newsgroup only * * I will not react on unsolicited e-mails * "Bull Splat" wrote in message om... If you have/know someone with xl2002/2003, it has a repair feature that
**Might** be able to open it. Alternative it so download OpenOffice, install it, and see if you can open it with that. Or it may just be gone. Along with saving repeatedly, you need to make backups. -- Regards, Tom Ogilvy Bull Splat wrote in message om... Thanks to all that responded. OpenOffice did open the file, but it
couldn't replicate the extensive formatting, chart options, etc. I had been saving this file frequently with new file names, but I stopped doing that when the macros wouldn't work across multiple workbooks (I had to go into the each macro and search and replace the name of the workbook to get the macro to run). I'm certain that this is due to a novice understanding of the programming side of Excel, and I've since started saving all of my Macros in a macro worksheet where they're available to all worksheets, but I still run into minor problems as far as workbook names. So, the good news is "I saved a Ton of Money on my Insurance", whoops, sorry, the good news is all of the macros I created are still available in the macro worksheet, and I've lost only a day of work as far as getting this project delivered. Thanks again to all, this forum is great! |

ThisWorkbook refers to the workbook containing the code, obviating the need
to include a hard coded name. -- Regards, Tom Ogilvy Bull Splat wrote in message om... Thanks to all that responded.
