Error accessing the system registry
 

I get this error: "Error accessing the system registry"
when I try to put a control or go in to Design Mode.

Also, my macros are not being saved.

Can you suggest what areas I can look to debug this?

I am getting the same message when I open and close excel

header says microsoft visual basi
several things start happening to my computer after I receive this message and I usually reboot. The error keeps coming up after I have been running some applications for a while. It doesn't happen right away

I've never seen this error, so I'm guessing it's not excel that's causing the
problem.

Something that's starting when excel starts is causing trouble.

Chip Pearson has some instructions for finding problems at:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

Essentially, you're going to move stuff out of your XLStart folder and uncheck
everything under Tools|Addins. (But keep track!)

Then one by one, you'll add one back and restart excel to see if that caused the
problem.
