Freeze/Unfreeze Panes and window display

Hello,

Excel'97 doesnt show data validation drop down box in the frozen pane.
Some users still have '97 version.

For '97 versions I would like to freeze/unfreeze panes based on cell
selection. Unfreeze panes when selecting cells on the "frozen" side of
the pane (where I have the dropdownboxes) and freeze the pane when on
the "Unfrozen" side. I freeze the panes in cell "E3". The first row has
the heading and the second row is always hidden. After Freeze/Unfreeze
I want the selected cell to be approximately in the same place on the
window as it was before the freeze/unfreeze - to minimize the
"jumping" effect. The row heights in the spreadsheet can be different,
depending on user entires. The column widths are fixed.

I have tried the following :

Save the address of the selected cell, scroll row, scrollcol

Scroll the window to (1,1)

Select "E3"

Freeze/Unfreeze

Make some adjustments to the saved scrollrow, scrollcol because the
heading may show or not show depending on freeze/unfreeze.

sselect the savedcell

scroll the window to (savedscrollrow, savedscrollcol).

The above doesnt work all the time, especially for cells located near
the bottom of the window. Is there any sure way to acheive
what I need without the selected cell position not changing too much
after Freeze/UnFreeze.

Thank you.
