#value! on spreadsheet when formula palette gets correct result

=AVERAGE(IF(C5:C14="Europe",D5:D14)), an example in the help, gives correct
result within the palette formula editor, but the #value! is all that shows
up in the spreadsheet.

do you enter as an array (control + shift + enter)?
