Why can't I name a cell "c" in Excel?

I've noticed that a cell cannot be named "c" within Excel. I've also noticed
the column in which the cell resides will be highlighted after I try this.
Any explanations? The Help files don't provide me with an answer...

Thanks!

Cowgirl,

The names R and C, and names beginning with R of C and immediately followed by an integer are not
allowed, due to the R1C1 notation used in formulas when the A1 notation is not used.

I should have also noted that any valid cell address is not allowed as a name C1, C2, etc are all
unallowed names as well...
