how do you use data from another workbook in the lookup function of another
workbook? used to be that you could just point to an open workbook, point to
the drop down named range and select the name and jump back to finish your
formula in your orig workbook.

Enter a extra sheet (where you need to run Vlookup) with all needed cells
pointing to your external source (=file and cell) and run your VLOOKUP an
this extra (now internal) sheet

Thanks, but this is not feasible. the lookup table is maxed out on rows and
about 35 columns and adding this to many workbooks would take lots of room.
the lookup data table is static, it is census and marketing data based on
zipcodes.

this would be a one-time lookup, and after the data is placed, i'd copy and
paste special value, since it would slow to constantly re-calc.
