When I open a folder in Excel, some of the files are in blue type. What does
the blue type signify?

Usually the blue type indicates that the file is compressed. You can check
it on the properties on the file, if it is not shown in the first screen look
on the advanced button.

Blue font means they are "compressed" NTFS files.

Green font means they are "encrypted" files.
