In any one sheet (in XL2003, my curr ver.),
there are 256 cols x 65,536 rows = 16,777,216 cells per sheet

No, its xx columns by yy rows.
(1048576 rows by 16384 columns, instead of 65536 by 256)

It is, however, likely to be limited in practice by the memory of your
machine.
I haven't tried it yet, as I'm waiting for a few more of the bugs to be
found by the brave beta users.
