If I have a grid with a list of places in the left hand column and along
the top how can I get the value from the grid to insert itself into a
column when the two places are in the column. Thus if I enter two
places into the relevant columns the distance between them shall appear
from the grid?

Assuming you are describing a mileage chart.

See this google search thread result for a few methods of doing this.

If you have the duplicate names already entered in Column A and B you can go
with the intersection operator method I describe.

It is a distance chart, but I need to essentially enter a value from the
table when I type the corresponding plsaces in.
For example; using the following table

Spain Brazil India
Spain 25 30
Brazil 25 50
India 30 50

I then need to insert the value from the table into coulumn 3 when
column 1 and 2 match on the table.
i.e.

Col1 Col2 Col3

Spain Brazil 25
Brazil India 50


Any further help would be very much appreciated.
