Excel Toolbar does not save

I have an excel toolbar that will not save (or is being overwritten after
saving). I modify the toolbar with my icons and then close excel. When I
reopenExcel, the toolbar displays like I saved it for about 2 seconds then
reverts back to its original format. I have deleted the excel.xlb file,
recreated it, renamed it, etc... I have saved the document, saved a
template and removed adobe. Only to have the toolbars revert back to their
original state.. I have even reinstalled Excel. All other toolbars work
like normal (Word, PP, Outlook), just not Excel. Any ideas greatly
appreciated. Currently my workaround is to create a template (XLB file) and
open Excel from that everytime, but if anyone just opens Excel any other way
other than using the template icon, it uses the xlb that takes it back to
defaults. Thanks!

I'm guessing that you have multiple *.xlb files on your pc.

And the real *.xlb is getting saved correctly -- but you have a *.xlb that
overrides/supersedes your real one--and that one doesn't get updated.

I had a *.xlb file in my XLStart folder. My real toolbar was loaded, then
replaced with the *.xlb file in my XLStart folder. When I made changes, my real
toolbar was updated, but that didn't help the next time I opened excel. (The
file in my XLStart folder just kept superseding the real one!)

So I'd start by closing excel and looking for all the *.xlb files.

Windows|Start button|Search
look for *.xlb in hidden folders and hidden files.

You could move each *.xlb to a nice safe folder and restart excel. Then make a
minor change to a toolbar. Close excel and search again for your *.xlb files.

You'll see where the real file should be. Then it's your choice to take one of
those saved files and put it in its rightful home--or just rebuild it from
scratch.

Thanks for the post. I tried this and still no luck. I deleted every xlb
file I could find, let the system generate a new one, found that location,
changed the toolbar, saved it and even modified one and put it in that
folder, however each time it is overwritten by the generic one. It appears
as if something is overriding it, like another application, because it
appears with my configuration for about 1-3 seconds and then reverts.
Thanks again for the post, any more ideas.

I'm guessing you missed one (a common problem).

close excel
shell to DOS
windows start button|Run
cmd (windows 2k/xp)
command (windows 98)

At the DOS prompt:
C: (to get to the C: drive)
cd\ (to get to the root directory)

dir *.xlb /s

the /s means to search through subdirectories.

Maybe you'll be able to see/delete the files.
