If I have a list of birthdays (05/31/1987) is there a formula that will
translate this into age (19 yrs, x days)?

Try Chip Pearson's site: http://www.cpearson.com/excel/datedif.htm

="("&datedif(birthday,now(),"y")&"yrs,"datedif(bir thday,now(),"yd")&")"
should give the format you asked for.
