Engineering format

I make graphs with frequency on the X-axis, so I naturally use
logarithmic scale and the labels in the engineering format, ie. the
exponent is multiples of 3 to denote the prefixes milli-, mega-, kilo-,
etc. When the labels are printed they are written as 10E-03, 10E06,
10E03, etc.

1) Is it possible to avoid the E00, when the unit stands alone without
prefix?
2) Is it possible to create a format which replaces the 'E-09' with
'nano' or just 'n', 'E09' with 'Giga' or 'G', etc.?
