Default How can I stop excel from automatically making hyperlinks

I am using Excel 2003. Whenever I enter an email address in a cell, it turnes
into a hyperlink as soon as I click enter. How can I stop excel from doing
that. It is making it very difficult to work with excel. It started to do
this even though I have been using excel for years.
Thank you for you help.
