How do I change worksheet background?

I have tried everything to get the spreadsheet background back to
normal(blank) but it is a mauve color and very annoying...I have tried
background and formating ...I take everything away if its there but the color
stays...

In your 'formatting' toobar have you tried outlining the offending area and
under 'fill color' select 'no fill'

Click on a cell and then go to Format|Conditional Formatting... and
check for any conditional formats. I'm guessing you have one that sets
cell color to 'mauve' for empty cells.

yes that isn't it
It's the whole file and spreadsheet...but my other files are fine...it has
been this way for a year now...one day it just appeared that way...the file
is shared with accounting (full of bills and numbers...)

that's not it either, no color is set.
the whole file and spreadsheet is mauve with and without data
I can change the format but when I clear that color the default appears to
mauve instead of no color which is preferred...grrrrrr :(

Can you try to highlight the whole sheet then
'format'....'cells'...'patterns' and see if that is mauve?

Have you checked under Tools, Options, Color tab and make sure it's set
on black & white?
