How do I protect the cells in a list without stopping it from activating?

I'm assuming you've got data validation on one or more cells and that
this validation refers to a list that you want to protect. A guess
because it is unclear.

If so unlock the cells that have the data validation, leave the list
cells locked, and then protect the worksheet.
