Excel 2002 workbook - approx. 84K in size. Last saved 4/13/06. Click on
file name to open today, 4/18/06. What I get is the Excel screen with some
of the tool bar area greyed out, no workbook or even a worksheet showing, and
most of the menu items greyed out. Any ideas what happened to this file?

If it opens okay when you do a File, Open from Excel's menus, make sure you
do not have Ignore other Applications selected under Tools, Options,
General.

Thanks for the suggestion. It made me realize I hadn't tried to open this
file from within Excel, that I'd only tried opening it via Windows file
manager. That said, it's the same story. If I open Excel, then find the
file via File Open, the program goes through the motions as though it is
opening the file . . . it asks if I want to update links, I either accept or
not, then the program continues on with the file open process. But nothing
shows up on the screen. I am left looking at the default Book1. If I close
Book1, I am left with the basic Excel program screen, no open workbooks.
HOWEVER . . . when I exit Excel, it asks me if I wish to save changes to the
file I tried to open as though it is open on my screen. But it isn't. I
can't see the file, there's no open workbooks apparent.

I checked the Tools Option you suggested, but Ignore Other Applications was
not selected.

Responding to myself here . . . problem may be link related. This Excel file
is linked to a Word file. It started misbehaving after the last update to
the Word file. I have restored the previous save of the Excel file and can
now access data. However, after the file opens, a warning that the same file
using same name is open already appears. I don't know why the file doesn't
open as read only if that is the case. I believe the warning is to make one
aware that a file by the same name exists in a different folder and that
there may be a conflict. But when I search the entire directory [D: drive],
there is no file by the same name in any of the folders or subfolders.

I'll continue to dig. If anyone has any ideas about file open conflicts
with linked files [Word<-Excel], let me know!
