Excel 2000 vs. 2003 link updating

Half of our office uses Excel 2000 and half use 2003. We've noticed that
workbooks with external links to other workbooks open much more slowly in
2000, perhaps 30 seconds longer. Are there any settings in 2000 that could
be adjusted to increase the speed?
