Cells get automatically highlighted

This is a recurring problem I have. When I am in a worksheet, sometimes when
selecting a cell to enter or change data, the cell gets highlighted and other
cells get higlighted if I drag the mouse. I cannot enter/change data at this
point and the program becomes unresponsive. I then have to quit the program
from the task list menu.

When I return to the worksheet again, the worksheet is basically useless as
the problem continues upon the first cell selection.

This happens randomly. I have tried reloading the program but that has not
helped.

Any ideas?

This is a known, but unacknowledged, bug in Excel. Possible
remedies include clicking a few times on the mouse wheel, and, if
you have a USB mouse, disconnecting and reconnecting the mouse.
