Can't open an *.xls file

When I double click on a .xls file MS Excell 2003 opens but the file does
not. All I see is the excel headers and grey area. When I click on the
window menu everything is greyed out.
To make things even more frustrating if I click File and then Open in Excel
and click on the same exact file everything opens perfect.

I have tried the following:

uninstall and reinstall of office 2003.
Start - run- excel /unregserver
Start - run- excel /regserver

I am open to any ideas.

Thanks,

Garrett

Maybe the first portion of this saved post would help:

Sometimes one of these works when you're having trouble with double clicking on
the file in windows explorer:

Tools|Options|General|Ignore other applications (uncheck it)

--- or ---

Close Excel and
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /unregserver
then
Windows Start Button|Run
excel /regserver

The /unregserver & /regserver stuff resets the windows registry to excel's
factory defaults.
