Default Date format does not appear in cell

I have a row in a worksheet displaying dates in calendar order. Something
happened that changed the format in all the cells from m/d/y format to a
number like 38596 for 9/1/2005. When I select one of these cells the date
appears correctly in the formula bar. I can not reformat and get the dates to
display correctly in the cells.

I would like to know what hapened and how to fix it. Also, at the same time
the cell width changed to a wider cell. I can not get all the cells back to
their original size (smaller). I get an error message: "Object can not be
shifted off sheet".

ToolsOptionsView, uncheck Formulas. Or hot CTRL+` (Press and hold ctrl, press ` (on the ~ key probably) and release both)
You probably got it via this shortcut key combination

Hi Brent
Sounds like you inadvertently revealed the formulas. Tools, Options, View,
remove the check mark from "formulas" (bottom left of dialogue box)
