Freeze panes just splits my page into quadrants
 

when what I really want it to do is freeze the first column. How can I
change it?

I think you should:
1. Unfreeze the panes
2. Select B1
3. Freeze the panes

If you want just column a frozen

Hi!

Unfeeze panes, select cell B1, then try it again!

The panes will be frozen at the column to the left and the row above the
selected cell.

If you select cell B2, both column A and row 1 will be frozen.
