Default how to make a chart for frequently used items

I'd like to make a chart for frequently used items by calendar year. I have
a listing (database) of all items. Now I'd like to make sure each item has a
formula so that when I write in a calendar that i've used it on a particular
day, it is recorded. So that at the end of the year I know what I've used
the most.
