Formating Question Please

Excel 2003
I have several groups of cells forming squares these squares have a border
line around them making them appear as though each of these groups is a
larger square. I need to make a line from the left top to the right bottom.
When I use the borders angle formatting even if all the cells are selected
Excel wants to make the diagonal line through each individual cell rather
than just the selected larger area. Does anyone know how to do this.

Thanks in advance... Bob

Select all the cells that are on the diagonal line
click A1
hold down ctrl and click B2
hold down ctrl and click C3
etc
Then click cell formatting borders and click a diagonal line.

Unfortunately that didn't work because even tough the total area is square
some of the cells that make it up are of varying column widths.
