Copied data auto-formatted in Excel

Hi there, copying data from one Excel spreadsheet into another using
Excel 2003. Although the 'receiving' spreadsheet has been formatted as
General, the data autoformats as "Number". Is there any way to turn
this off and have the 'receiving' spreadsheet retain its General
properties? (In my case the numbers have leading zeroes that
disappear).

Thanks.
